Last November I had the awesome privilege to be one of 12 invited faculty members on an A. P. Biology teaching and research oceanographic cruise in Hawaii. John Kay from Iolani High School in Honolulu, HI. had been making plans for this trip for over a year. The idea was to take A.P. biology kids out onto and into the water, off the coast of Lanai, HI, and teach several of the A.P. biology labs in the natural setting where these organisms live and interact with one another in the environment!! His dream came true last November.

Go for Andes Mountains

The Andes mountains divide Ecuador North to South creating what the celebrated explorer Alexander Humboldt termed the "Avenue of Volcanoes". Volcanic Equatorial glacial peaks reaching over 20,000 ft, (6,300m) thrust up from the paramo, expansive high plains that form a unique ecosystem as they drop into cloudforests and eventually into the Amazon Rainforest or Pacific Coast.


The high peaks of Ecuador offer a number of challenges for climbers from the beginner to the experienced. See the mountaineering section to reach the top.

The paramo highland zone offers extraordinary trekking and horseback riding opportunities.

Multiple day trips in this environment are extremely rewarding.
